There’s something special about the rainy season on the West Coast. The constant drizzle, the crisp air, and the misty streets create the perfect excuse to hop from one café to another, seeking warmth in a good cup of coffee. On this trip through Seattle and Portland, I visited over ten cafés—some recommended by friends, some found through Google searches, and some well-known spots I had been eager to try. While many were enjoyable, only a select few stood out. Heart Coffee was one of them.
Heart Coffee: A Name Worth the Hype?
Heart Coffee made it onto Roastful’s 2024 list, which was reason enough to check it out. Upon arriving, I realized they didn’t offer pour-over—only drip coffee. While pour-over highlights a barista’s skill, drip brewing relies more on the quality of the beans. That said, the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe washed drip coffee I had that day was nothing short of addictive.
It had a bright acidity with intense fruity sweetness, dominated by berry notes and a hint of rose aroma. The flavors were bold yet clean—perfect for those who prefer coffee without bitterness. I enjoyed it so much that I couldn’t leave without taking home a bag of the same beans, along with another high-altitude variety to experiment with pour-over brewing later.
Aesthetic Vibes at the Burnside Location
I visited the Burnside location, which, aside from its excellent coffee, also boasts a stylish logo wall—a perfect spot for photos. The minimalist interior, combined with the soft, diffused light from the rainy weather, created a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it an ideal place to relax.
Is It Worth a Visit?
If you’re a fan of bright, fruit-forward coffees and find yourself in Portland, Heart Coffee is definitely worth a stop. Even though I didn’t get to try their pour-over, the quality of their drip coffee alone speaks volumes about their bean selection and roasting expertise. Next time, I’d love to explore more of their offerings.
